Candle making was introduced in 2002 as part of a skill-development program for children. One of educators volunteered to learn the craft at the Raphael Institute in Dehradun and then shared his knowledge with the students. Individual Människohjälp, a Swedish nonprofit, offered important help at the outset of the project. Even today, children are taught the essential step-by-step methods required for the process. Once they have gained confidence and mastered the skills, they are encouraged to work freely, with the teacher functioning just as a supervisor. This technique not only improves their practical skills, but it also encourages imagination and creativity.

The candles made by children are used in meaningful ways. Some are provided as gifts to visitors and volunteers, while others are sold to local Tibetan communities for use in religious candle-lighting ceremonies. This exercise teaches children not just a creative craft, but also the value of contributing to their community.
