Education

What we teach & what we facilitate.
Classes

Based on the ability of children, the classes have been arranged. At present, we have seven classes for children who have mental and behavior disabilities, children with the most profound disabilities. For young children or older ones whose progress is very slow and, senior pupils who can do some academic work. As per the daily timetable, teachers and assistant teachers are engaged with children in different classes.

Library

Most of the books are donated from the UK, a large number of books were added to the library. There are more books in the library and all the classrooms also had books in them. The library has continued to grow a little, with a change in the way the shelves are arranged and some more shelves added and it has made it look even more attractive.

One side of the library has been screened off so that it has become a computer area. Three computers for the children’s use have been given by Dutch donors and the necessary wiring etc. put in place. This therefore makes a very good new facility for the school.

Art

Art class can be defined as our pride section with initial achievement. Children prepare different decorative things as according to their creativity like paper flowers, photo frames, greeting cards, envelopes and paintings too. Art class helps us to recognize and improve the capability of our children as according to their disability. Our children prepare all the greeting cards for the sponsors and donors.

Music and Dance

All the children are made to learn Tibetan traditional and modern culture except the severe ones who cannot move at all.Wheelchair bound students are taught Tibetan songs while others are made to practice different Tibetan dances. This reminds them of our rich culture and tradition. It also creates a sense of responsibility to preserve our unique identity. Children present songs and dances on different occasions including world disability day, participation in cultural show competition with other disabled schools etc.

Candle Making

Candle making was introduced in the year 2002. One of our teachers volunteered to learn this technique from the Raphael Institute in Dehradun. The generous fund to run this project was provided by Swedish organization Individual Manniskojap. Initially, capable children are introduced with the raw materials and then procedures are taught for few days. Afterwards, children are left on his or her own with our teacher as just a supervisor. This also helps to give an ignition to the creativity of our children. Finished candles are presented as gift to school visitors and volunteers, and are sold to the local Tibetan communities for candle lighting religious ceremonies.

Tailoring

Tsering Choekey,a physical handicapped student of first batch of this school was sent to Raphael for vocational course in tailoring and Indian sign language. She teaches our children how to design, cut and stitch clothes as well as Indian sign language. We have five sewing machines with children trying to learn the basics ideas. This also helps to ignite their creativity in the field of designing.

Gardening

Gardening is more like teamwork. This gives our children an exposure to agriculture life. Variety of vegetables and flowers are grown in our little occupied space for gardening. Children are able to see and realize the process of field work practically. Senses of responsibility develop in them.

Sign Language

Indian sign language is of extreme need with six deaf and mute students in our school. If one fails to communicate properly through sign language, the whole meaning turns opposite. Majority of students and staffs communicate well through signing and those left out were eager to learn sign language.

Home Science period

This period is the periodof full involvement of students. Students are divided in the whole process of preparing meals. Thereafter, the prepared meals are distributed among the students themselves to taste and realize what they made.

Health

We took full care of childrens health

Physiotherapy Unit

Our Physiotherapy unit comprises of two physiotherapist and an assistant. They work with the basic principle of respecting and empowering the child by focusing on the maximum recovery of children. Their unit goes through a cycle of assessment, planning, implementing the treatment plan and evaluating progress. The most common conditions are cerebral palsy, delayed milestone, and muscular dystrophy. A wide range of techniques is used in the treatment of children with the combination of therapy with a play and games, and music so that learning and therapy becomes an enjoyable process.

Clinic

A nurse and a heath worker in this unit takes care of children’s daily medication of both Tibetan and Allopathic medicines from early in morning till late night. We have specialized visiting doctor from the Dekyiling Health Centre. Prevention of disease and minor dressing are done in the clinic and, taking of the sick child to the health care centre or hospitals.

Welfare

Welfare responsibility is fully taken by us

We have five homes with ten children in each home and these children are looked after by two foster parents. In each home, they have a tape recorder to play music as autistic children love it. And they have a cupboard filled with toys to play during off days from classes. Most of the children are taught the discipline to take the toys to play and keep back after playing. Based on their ability, they are taught how to brush the teeth, wash the face and take a bath. They are taught how to sweep, clean the bedding and wipe their dining table. Some of them can help the foster parents for washings and dressing the other unable children in the homes. Most of them can learn basic house chores.

All the children at Ngoenga School are being provided free boarding, education and health care services. Therefore, financial assistance is very much needed for us to make these services available to our children with special needs.
